There’s something elemental about pulling cool water straight from a river on a hot day. Rivers can look pristine, but we know there can be sneaky microbes like bacteria and protozoa ready to upset your plans if you drink untreated water. Even clear, fast-flowing water can harbour pathogens, and sediment can carry organic debris and microplastics. Filtering your water is essential for avoiding the dreaded funny tummy.
There are three core methods you can use for river water: boiling, chemical purification, and physical filtration. Boiling takes time and fuel. Chemical tablets work but alter taste and take patience to do their work. Filtration physically removes particles and many harmful organisms as you collect water or drink from it. For day hikes, overnight trips or lightweight packing, portable filters are the most convenient.
Smart Filter Options
HydraPak’s approach to hydration is practical and modular, so you can pick what fits your adventure and pack weight. These options generally remove common bacteria and protozoa that may be lurking in river water, like Escherichia coli bacteria, Cryptosporidium parvum cysts, and Giardia Lamblia (99.9%).
PackFlask™+ 750 ml Portable Filter Bottle
The PackFlask™ + 750 ml is a soft and collapsible handheld water bottle with a built-in filter that removes bacteria and protozoa from river water as you roll or squeeze it through. It is designed for fast-and-light day trips and longer bushwalks where every gram counts. You can fill it right at the river’s edge and drink directly from the filtered stream of water, and the handy
The handy filter cap will filter roughly 1 500 litres of water and maintains a strong flow of over 1 litre per minute, delivering potable water quickly when you need it most, while the handy pouch attaches to your pack harness for a hands-free carry.
Seeker™+ High-Capacity Filtration
If you’re planning a group outing or campsite base, the Seeker+ series gives you big capacity with an Inline Filter, allowing water to be dispensed from the HydraPak Camp Tap. The Seeker+ 6 L is a handy reservoir that stores water and filters it as you dispense through the push-button tap accessory. These are great for longer stays at camp, where you want a reliable source of clean water without carrying bottles for every person.
28 mm Filter Kit
Some HydraPak hydration systems don’t have a built-in filter. That’s where the 28 mm Filter Kit comes in. This accessory threads onto any bottle or flask with a 28 mm opening or connects to Plug-N-Play systems on HydraPak reservoirs. It turns your existing bladder or reservoir into a filtration system so you can sip safely from rivers, streams or lakes.
This kit filters water you squeeze or let gravity do the work, removing pathogens and sediment as you drink or fill another container.
Breakaway+ Filtration Bottles
HydraPak’s Breakaway+ line integrates filtration into everyday bottles aimed at cyclists and general outdoor users. These bottles use squeeze-activated filters and a twist cap with MuckGuard to keep grit and mud from your mouthpiece, so you can drink confidently after filling from a natural water source.
How to Use These Filters Off-Grid
Start by collecting the clearest water you can find. Water nearer the surface and moving quickly over rocks tends to have fewer pathogens than stagnant pools. Silt and sediment make filtration harder and clog cartridges faster, so aim for a clean inflow point.
When using a HydraPak filter product, fill, squeeze or let gravity pull water through the membrane. Water exits into your mouth, another bottle, or directly into a pot for cooking. Keep your filter clean by backflushing it with clear water when the flow slows. Follow any instructions that come with your filter and replace elements as recommended to maintain effectiveness.
